wonen om Gods wille in LEIDSE HOFJES Meer dan 500 jaar geleden ontstonden in Leiden de eerste hofjes. Nog vóór de reformatie in de zestiende eeuw werden er zeven gebouwd en een gasthuis dat later als hofje functioneerde. Deze hofjes worden in dit boek beschreven. Ze werden gesticht door particulieren, meestal afkomstig uit de rijke burgerij en de lage adel. Hun doel was om arme oudere mensen gratis te laten wonen. In hun stichtingsakte omschreven deze weldoeners hun daad met de woorden: ‘wonen om Gods wille’. Door dergelijke werken van barmhartigheid te verrichten, konden zij niet alleen een plek in de hemel verdienen, maar ook hoge posities en aanzien op aarde. De reformatie bracht echter grote veranderingen teweeg. Ook in de Leidse hofjes waren de gevolgen hiervan te merken. Ine Leermakers en Wietske Donkersloot schetsen uitgebreid en goed gedocumenteerd de unieke ontwikkeling van katholiek naar protestants. In de inleiding wordt het geheel in het brede historische kader geplaatst van de strijd om de armenzorg tussen Kerk en Staat. More than 500 years ago the first Leiden almshouses were established. Prior to the Reformation in the sixteenth century seven almshouses were built, as well as a hospice that would later on be partially converted into an almshouse. These almshouses are described in this book. Established by private individuals, usually members of the wealthy citizenry or lower nobility, their aim was to offer free accommodation to destitute elderly. In the almshouse foundation act the beneficiaries would usually describe the arrangement as ‘living for the sake of God’. These acts of charity not only secured them of a place in heaven but gained them standing and access to influential positions in addition. However the Reformation would bring about dramatic change which implications would be felt by the Leiden almshouses as well. Ine Leermakers and Wietske Donkersloot describe the unique development of each almshouse in a well-documented and elaborate fashion, while placing the phenomenon in a broader historical framework.
